This scholarship was established in honour of Rudy Berger who enjoyed a successful career in the tourism and hospitality industry all across Canada. After graduating from Western Canada High School, Rudy’s entrepreneurial drive led him to build his own hamburger stand at the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede. He then set up his business at exhibitions and fairs across the Prairies. This led to a successful career in restaurant management, which, in turn, led to a successful career in hotel management. Rudy worked as the General Hotel Manager with Seaway Hotels and Ramada Inns of Canada in Toronto and Montreal. He was also President of the Montreal Hotel Association. Many years later, Rudy returned to Calgary to open the Glenmore Inn as General Manager and to oversee its 1600 seats of food and beverage/banquet facilities. Rudy loved all aspects of the hotel business from interacting with guests to overseeing special events and catering. The intent of this scholarship is to help students with similar passions pursue education and careers related to the tourism/hospitality industry.

Open to students registered in grade 12 who are completing the requirements of a high school diploma. Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents, have academic grades sufficient to allow admission into their chosen area of study/educational facility and demonstrate leadership/participation in community/volunteer activities related to the Tourism/Hospitality industry (e.g.: Calgary Stampede).
Applicants are required to submit an original essay of approximately 500 words or a short video (maximum 5 minutes in length) describing their future aspirations in the Tourism / Hospitality Industry and why they selected their chosen program. The essay/video may also reflect on their most memorable customer and/or leadership experience working/volunteering in the Tourism / Hospitality Industry.

Selection & Payment
Recipients are selected by September. The EducationMatters Selection Committee may also include the donor or their representative. To claim the award, within one (1) year of notification of award the recipient must be registered in an eligible program of post-secondary study in Calgary of at least two years duration. Payment will be made to the post-secondary institution.
