Eligibility

Open to students registered in grade 12 who demonstrate financial need and are completing the requirements of a high school diploma. Applicants must have demonstrated academic progress in grade 12 and marks sufficient for entrance to a post-secondary area of study. Applicants are required to submit proof of financial need. Applicants are required to submit an original essay of approximately 500 words describing “the impact that receiving funding for post-secondary will have on their life, why they picked their specific field of study, what they hope to accomplish and how they will realize their goals.” Applicants are encouraged to submit letters of reference from a school official, employer, or a community leader representing a community-based organization. The recipient must not hold any other scholarship(s) or award(s) administered by EducationMatters. International fee-paying students are not eligible to apply for this award. Selection will be based on the level of financial need, academics, and the essay.

Selection & Payment

Recipients are selected and notified by September. The Selection Committee will include the donor and representatives from Calgary Foundation and EducationMatters. To claim the award, within twelve (12) months of notification of award, the recipient must be registered in an eligible program of post-secondary study in Canada of at least two years duration. In order to receive continued funding, award holders must maintain sufficient academic standing to continue in post-secondary based on a full-time course load (as determined by the institution) for the previous semester and provide proof of enrollment. A transcript must accompany each subsequent proof of enrollment which must be received no later than three (3) months after the beginning of the semester. Award will be available to recipients for a five year period for University programs and three years for trade vocational programs once payment is initiated; students must continue in an appropriate field of study and maintain an adequate GPA as per the terms of the award. Recipients must notify EducationMatters as soon as possible if they plan to defer their award or change their course of study. Payments are made to the post-secondary institution.
