Kinsmen Club of Calgary Foundation Scholarship

The Kinsmen are a service club founded in Calgary in 1924 with the purpose to “serve the community’s greatest needs”. The club and foundation are 100% volunteer based and are active fundraisers with the Calgary Stampede lotteries as well as doing service work throughout the community. The goal of this scholarship is to encourage and recognize philanthropy and community service through volunteerism.

Eligibility

Open to students registered in grade 12 who are completing the requirements of a high school diploma. Applicants must exemplify leadership as demonstrated through volunteer activities within the school and community and have academic requirements sufficient for entrance into their chosen program of study.

Applicants are required to submit an original essay of approximately 500 words describing their volunteerism, how they have demonstrated leadership in their volunteerism and the impact they feel their service has had on the community.

Applicants are required to submit one letter of reference. The letter may be provided by a community leader representing a community-based organization or a school official, and should speak to the applicant’s leadership, volunteerism and involvement in the community.

Selection will be based on volunteerism, essay and the reference.

Students can apply by creating an account in EducationMatters’ Student Award Application Portal. Applicants should check with their guidance office for more information and are encouraged to discuss their application with the Scholarship Coordinator at their high school.

Selection & Payment

Recipients are selected by September. The EducationMatters Selection committee may also include a representative from the Kinsmen Club of Calgary Foundation. To claim the award, the recipient must be registered in an eligible program of post-secondary study and provide proof of enrolment within one year of notification. Payments are made to the post-secondary institutions.
