Eligibility

Open to students at Western Canada High School graduating Grade 12 who plan to pursue post-secondary education. Applicants are welcome to apply to one of the three areas listed above.

Applicants for the “citizenship” award must demonstrate exemplary leadership and commitment to community involvement through volunteering and participation in co-curriculars at their school.

Applicants for the “athletics/sport” award must have been actively involved in athletics at Western, demonstrating strong commitment and leadership.

Applicants for the “overall” award should demonstrate a strong commitment to bettering their school/community as a well as involvement/excellence in a variety of areas within the school.

Students are required to submit a written essay of no more than 500 words OR have the option to submit a video response on the topic outlined below based on the award/area they are applying for.

1) Citizenship – Please describe the volunteer activities you’ve been involved with in your school and community, how you’ve demonstrated leadership in these roles and the impact you feel you’ve had on your school/community.

2) Athletics/Sports – Please describe your involvement in athletics/sports at Western, the impact athletics has had on your life and how you have demonstrated leadership through your participation in athletics.

3) “Overall” award – Please describe why you’ve chosen your particular post-secondary program, the positive impact you feel you’ve had on your community and the impact you hope to continue to have based on your chosen field of study/career and the impact that receiving this award will have on your post-secondary journey.

One letter of recommendation is required. The letter for the “citizenship” award should be from a teacher or community leader who can attest to the applicant’s involvement in the school/community, the letter for the “athletics” award should be from a coach/teacher that is familiar with the applicant’s athletic involvement and the letter for “overall” award may be provided from a teacher, school official, employer, or a community leader representing a community-based organization.

Selection will be based on leadership, participation in co-curriculars/volunteering, essay and reference.

Students can apply by creating an account in EducationMatters’ online portal. Applicants should check with their guidance office for more information and are encouraged to discuss their application with the Scholarship Coordinator at their high school.

Selection & Payment

Recipients are selected and notified in May. The selection committee may consist of staff at Western Canada High School, the donor, and a representative of EducationMatters. To claim the award, the recipient must be registered in an eligible program of post-secondary study in Canada within one year of notification. Payments are made to the post-secondary institution.
