Chris McMechan Memorial Award in Science and Outdoor Pursuits
Chris McMechan’s career with the Calgary Board of Education spanned three decades, joining Henry Wise Wood High School in 2007. A beloved Science teacher, Mr. McMechan was well known for his tie-dyed lab coat, his engaging and thoughtful lessons, and the genuine care he showed every student – creating a classroom where curiosity was welcomed and questions were met with honesty and respect. Chris was deeply dedicated to his subject area and loved sharing his knowledge with students.

Eligibility
Open to students registered in grade 12 at Henry Wise Wood High School who are completing the requirements for a high school diploma. Applicants must have marks sufficient for entrance to a program of postsecondary study and demonstrated perseverance and strong work ethic.
This award recognizes grit and sustained effort in the pursuit of a personal best in science. While applicants must meet post-secondary entrance requirements, selection is based not on the highest grades, but on evidence of growth, perseverance, and commitment to improvement. This award is based on the raw excitement and awe that scientific study creates. The recipient will also have demonstrated a passion and/or commitment to outdoor pursuits, such as outdoor endeavours, environmental stewardship or sustained engagement with the natural world. In the event of equally qualified candidates, financial need may be taken into consideration.
Applicants are required to submit a written statement of no more than 500 words describing why they feel they are a good fit for this award based on the outlined criteria.

Students can apply by creating an account in EducationMatters’ online portal. Applicants should check with their guidance office for more information and are encouraged to discuss their application with the Scholarship Coordinator at their high school.
Selection & Payment
Recipients are selected by the end of June. The selection committee will consist of staff from Henry Wise Wood and a representative of EducationMatters. To claim the award, the recipient must be registered in an eligible program of post-secondary study in Canada within one year of notification. Payments are made to the post-secondary institution.
