Creating cupcakesAs a foundation who care about our city, we seek to promote philanthropic or education-related events and initiatives to the community as well as look for opportunities to profile our Trust.  Here's some activities that might be of interest.




The 4Kids Provincial Lottery is back in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Edmonton, and Children's Cottage Society Calgary.  Tickets are on sale now for $25 each, 4 for $60, or 10 for $100. The 16th annual lottery offers nearly $1 million in cash and prizes, including the grand prize of $700,000!  Last year alone the 4Kids Lottery changed the lives of 7,000 Alberta children and their families. September 8 – International Literacy Day: This is the day to encourage and celebrate literacy in our community and around the world. Increased literacy means decreased crime rates and poverty, improved health and safety, increased high school completion rates and a number of other social, economic and protective factors. Calgary Action for Learning and Literacy (CALL) is a network of 21 partners from business, post secondary, government and the non-profit community. This new collaboration is working to raise awareness for the correlation between increased literacy and improved quality of life for all Calgarians.

September 20-22, 2010 - Professional Grant Development Workshop is a three-day grant proposal workshop geared for those who wish to master the techniques of preparing and writing winning proposals. Participants will learn about each step of the proposal process - from research and identifying funding sources, to packaging the final product. The workshop will be held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and includes a $595.00 USD fee, which covers tuition, materials, completion certificate, and continental breakfast. There is a rebate of $50 per person for two or more registrants from the same organization. Space is limited and spots are given on a first come, first serve basis.

September 21 & 22, 2010 - PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy at Country Hills Golf Course. This event, founded by Peter Gzowski, is in support of the Calgary Learning Centre, which helps individuals who struggle with literacy, learning, and attention difficulties. Everyone is invited to the reception on the evening of September 21, at a cost of $40 to enjoy entertainment with Bobby Wilson and local media celebrities. On September 22 come out for the golf tournament for an entry fee of $275, which goes to a great cause. For more information call 403-686-9300 or click here to view the invitation and register.

September 22, 2010 - Boomer Volunteers: An Unstoppable Resource is an interactive workshop on how to effectively recruit boomers as volunteers for your organization. Presented by Volunteer Calgary and Kerby Centre, this event features guest speaker David Cravit, VP of Zoomer Media Ltd. and author of "New Old - a look at how Baby-Boomers are re-defining aging...and what organizations can do about it". This event will be held at the Jayman Theatre, 3140 118 Ave SE from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at a cost of $15 for Volunteer Calgary members and $25 for non-members. September 23, 2010 7:30 AM - 10:00 AM - Mentoring in Schools Leads to Success - A breakfast with mentoring expert Dr. Michael Karcher is a seminar focused on the benefits of school-based mentoring and tools for student success. The event will be held at the Blackfoot Inn, 5940 Blackfoot Trail SE, with registration from 7:30-8:00, followed by complimentary continental breakfast and the presentation from 8:00-10:00. This free seminar is for educators, community leaders, funders and organizations interested in advancing youth mentoriship. Seating is limited and registration closes September 17, 2010.

September 23, 2010 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM - The Cost of Literacy: Investing in your workforce
features guest presenter, Mr. Craig Alexander, in celebration of Learn at Work Week. Alexander has 13 years experience conducting econminc analysis in the financial industry, and will speak to the state of literacy in Canada and the consequential costs of low-literacy levels. This event is being co-presented by ABC Life Literacy Canada and the Canadian Society for Training and Development and will be held at the Westin Calgary, 320, 4th Avenue SW. Members of the public are welcome and can click here to register. 

September 30, 2010 - Get Out the Vote Campaign is an Aboriginal town hall meeting with Mayoral Candidates for the City of Calgary  2010 Civic Elections. This event will be held in the Burnswest Theatre at Fort Calgary, 750 - 9th Avenue SE.  Aboriginal peoples are encouraged to exercise their right to vote on October 18, 2010, beginning with this opportunity to meet the candidates. Calgary Learns 2011 Request for Proposals for foundational adult learning programs. Each year Calgary Learns provides grants to community-focused non-profit organizations for programs targeted at a range of adult foundational learning opportunities. Applications must be submitted by October 1, 2010. Calgary Learns staff will be available to give feedback on proposals by appointment from September 13-24. October 1, 2010 - Calgary Girls Night Out is the second annual fundraising event hosted by Room to Read, a non-profit organization focused on eliminating the cycle of poverty through the education of women and children in nine developing countries. This year's event at the Westin Hotel (320 4th Ave SW) features a "Breakfast at Tiffany's" theme and includes a multi-course meal, open bar, live and silent auction, a live deejay, and some surprises. Tickets are $125 with all proceeds going directly to Room to Read. This is a fun event for women only! For more information, or to purchase tickets, click here.

October 6-8, 2010 - Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta Conference; Colour Outside the Lines
Registration is now open for the Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta (LDAA) Conference. This year’s LDAA Conference features actor Danny Glover who will discuss what was like to grow up with dyslexia. The theme of the conference, which features other fabulous presenters including actor Felix Justice and educator Richard Lavoie, is using the arts and individual strengths to enhance education and “Colour Outside the Lines.” For more information on sessions and conference costs and to register, click here.

October 15, 2010 - The Science of Reading the Brain with Maryanne Wolf is a session for anyone interested in learning more about recent brain research and its impact on literacy. The session will be held at the University of Calgary's MacEwan Hall Ballroom from 8:00am-4:00pm. Maryanne Wolf will spend the morning discussing her ground-breaking book, Proust and the Squid and her most recent research. The afternoon component will include interactive and facilitated conversations about the implications of this research for the various stages of reading. Inter-Action - Canada's new Multiculturalism Grants and Contributions Program has put out a call for proposals for projects. The deadline to submit proposals is October 15, 2010. More information can be found online, or by contacting Liz Rees at 403-292-4139. Stay tuned for a call for grant funding for events coming soon!

October 18 – GET OUT AND VOTE in the Calgary Municipal Elections. Vote for your next mayor, city council members and school board trustees. It's a privilege to be able to vote in a democratic society.
