EducationMatters is a public, non-profit foundation, established in May 2003. Our vision is a society that promotes and values excellence in public education. Operating at arms length from the Calgary Board of Education, EducationMatters is a stand-alone trust with its own Board of Governors and staff.

Our Core Values form the foundation of our organization's goals and purpose.

Formerly the Calgary Board of Education Foundation, EducationMatters was established to enrich and enhance the experience of Calgary’s public education students. We accomplish that by raising money and establishing funds in support of enhancement programs not offered as part of the core curriculum. We also manage and support student awards, scholarships and bursaries.

We presently handle approximately 96 endowment and flow-through funds - named funds, special interest funds, school specific funds and scholarship funds.

Annual grants are awarded for programs that address literacy, career and life skills, leadership and civic engagement, healthy learning, special needs, diversity, and keeping kids in school. Since our inception, we have received contributions and pledges of $6 million and granted nearly $2.4 million.

EducationMatters and its donors believe that a strong public education system is the cornerstone of a healthy, vibrant society, and that the best public education happens when the community participates in its development.
